Physically weak and few in number, the Star nevertheless possess enough magical power to obliterate an Archmage.

I kind of want the tone confirmed before I slot this into the timeline. (Whether or not you think it's obvious, it's not my place to dictate other people's tone choice.)

Oh right. Definitely should go for a dark tone there, I guess. We have a lot of dark periods.

All right, got it in. By the way, everyone, let me know if you want me to change the tab names I'm giving these. I just need a short summary so the UI doesn't bloat.

EDIT:
We have a lot of dark periods.
Our tonal control system is underdamped.

This only means you need to include some PAINFULLY bright and sweet sections where the "good guys" triumph through the power of love and friendship.

Only so you can deconstruct it in later periods of course.

Light Period directly after the first bookend.
The school of Uemer spreads across the planet. As shadow mages become an integral part of daily life, covered fire pits for convenient and contained magical exercises become common. Large cities develop networks of trenches and tunnels connecting multiple casting pits. Even travelers dig pits for their fire, lest the light of it summon shadows from far off. The widespread shadow magic greatly improves life, and as the population swells, continual festivals arise in the dusky light of the pits.

After eruption, before evacuation and the first Archmage.

The Order of the Lightened Mind colonizes the crater that was Mount Theria, exploiting the exposed natural resources in the area. Conditions are hazardous, and mutations run rampant throughout the population. Nevertheless, the soil is fertile, and the abundance of geothermal power makes it one of the few places able to sustain old-world technology.

I'm not sure that fully makes sense in light of (my understanding of) the timeline. But it's all in implications, anyway.

Is that a period or an event?
If it's an event, what period is it in?
If it's a period, you need to place it between to already existing periods.

I guess this is an appropriate time to link mwchase's excellent timeline summary.

Sorry about that, it's a post-disaster event. Where mwchase has it is basically where I intended it

Alright, it's time to finally begin the actual game.

The game works like this: each round begins by a player being designated as the Lens. This is based on the turn order (I am the first Lens, then mwchase and so on).
* The Lens determines the current focus, which can be anything - for example, a character, a country or even an abstract concept.
* The Lens creates two nested additions to the timeline (meaning, a new event inside a new period or a new scene inside a new event) that are related to the focus.
* The players take turns creating one period, event or scene each until the round ends. Each addition must relate in some way to the round's focus.
* The Lens designation passes to the next person in the turn order and the process repeats.

There are some more thing that take place in the transitions between rounds, but I'll explain those later.

As mentioned, I am the first Lens. Our first round will be focused on shadow magic.
For my turn, I am creating an event in the start period: On a clear summer day (which would later come to be known as The Day of Living Shadows), Uemer performs a massive demonstration of shadow magic in Carintia, the capital of the declining Averian Empire. This prompts the Averian leadership to dedicate the entirety of the empire's dwindling resources to the research and mastery of shadow magic.

In addition, I am creating a scene in the new event.

I suppose that this is the ideal time to explain what a scene is. A scene is a specific moment in history, which, instead of being unilaterally created by a single player, is shaped through a collaborative effort by all players. More specifically, the players roleplay characters in order to answer the question posed by the scene's creator.

In order to set up a scene, a player must describe the following:
1. The Question - a specific question which serves as the goal of the scene. The scene stops as soon as it's answered. The Question for this particular scene is:
Why did the Averian leadership become obsessed with shadow magic?
2. The time and place - When does the scene happen in relation to the event (and any prior scenes)? Where in the world does it take place?
This scene takes place in Carintia on The Day of Living Shadows.
3. Required characters - the scene's creator can specify up to two characters that must appear (and be played by players) in the scene, these can be specific characters or general descriptions (e.g. a guard, someone wearing sunglasses, etc.). The required characters for this scene are:
- Lilian IV, Empress of Averia
- Uemer
4. Banned characters - the scene's creator can specify up to two characters that can't appear in the scene. In this scene, they are:
- Anyone from outside the empire.
- Any non-humans.

Now that the scene is properly set up, players claim (or create) characters on a first come, first serve basis (no turn order). The creator picks last.
If you want to create a character that wasn't previously established in the history, provide a 2-3 sentence description of them.
Also, keep in mind that if there are required characters left after most of the players picked their character, the remaining players will have to pick a required character.

If you have any questions or require clarifications about any of the above, don't hesitate to ask.

I claim the character of the empress Lilian IV.

Times are tough for the empire of averia. The last three harvests were weak, and their allies have had it even worse. With poor trade and the lack of food, revolts are constant, and dead are piling up.Empress Lilian IV is sitting on her throne, barely containing her fury, thinking how to stop the most recent rebellion by the former general Thazzus, who has killed her husband not even a fortnight ago.Lucky for her,she has learned of this hermit living in a ruined monastery at the outskirts of her capital.Apparently, this self proclaimed monk has been able to help those who come to him with broken tools, without using any metal to repair them. This would help her immensely to bolster her ill equipped troops.

- Bring the monk inside,we shall question him now!

Roleplaying the scene itself (i.e. characters actually doing stuff), needs to wait until everyone has claimed a character.

I'm going to say there's a guard there for me to play. He lost a loved one years ago, and he blames himself for not acting fast enough; if he'd just been a little quicker, he could have saved them from that mysterious creature. Monster? Demon? He isn't sure. He always has a haunted look about him, but it's worse on days like this.

(I've only played Microscope once before, so I'm not sure if that was the right level of specificity and detail, but I can revise it if it needs anything.)

I want to join in, so I'm going to play... um... can't think of a name right now, but he's Lilian IV's court "mage". I put "mage" in quotation marks because he's a complete fraud who's freaking terrified of the thought of real magic entering the world.

Well, I kinda wanted to go last because I wasn't sure about how exactly I wanted my pick to go, but this has been lagging for a while, so...

I'll be playing Juliana, a member of an underground anti-magic society in Averia called the Sun's Fury. She's got an air of smiles and refinement, but underneath the surface she's a fanatic scarred from the disasters that have rocked the world and is terrified of the transformation magic seemingly promises. She's from a noble family who built their fortune on mines that have collapsed in earthquakes, so their wealth and status has been particularly hard-hit. She's petite, almost too much so. She intends to assassinate Uemer.

Alright, I will be Thomas Lessinger - acting chancellor of the Averian Empire (since the prior chancellor's death in Thazzu's rebellion), former adviser on imperial security and bastard son of a disgraced aristocrat. He puts on an air of confidence and unflappability, but secretly fears that the empire won't survive its' current downward spiral.

Now we can start playing out the scene. Our goal is to answer the question - Why did the Averian leadership become obsessed with shadow magic? - as soon as it's answered the scene ends, regardless of any other unfinished plot threads (these can always be explored in another scene).

You can write whatever you want as long as you follow these rules:
- Don't contradict the established history (the general timeline as well as things previously mentioned in the scene itself).
- Any direct effects of your actions on another player's character are under that player's control (for example, if your character tries to stab another player character, that player will decide whether he is successful).
- You can introduce other characters to facilitate the narrative, but keep in mind that the other players can control them as well.

Additionally, if you think you disagree with the additions of another player, you can push your version of the narrative. We will proceed with the version that has the support of a majority of players.

There are no turns, so everyone may act whenever they want to. The scene starts now, as Thomas rushes to the Reception Hall of the Imperial Palace, having heard of Uemer's arrival.

Nothing of this changes my description,so that remains.

So the empress is in the throne room, uemer is about to be brought in for questioning by her,we have one prominent guard in there, the court "mage" that will assist in the questioning because magics are involved, and chancellor of the empire who has just arrived.Juliana is in there too,but is she there secretly or publicly?

Publicly. There are several members of the nobility in attendance, curious to see this "magic", with just as many skeptics as there are those greedy to use the power themselves.

(I take it that Uemer is more a prisoner than an honored guest. If so, shall I wait for the Emperess' word to be dragged in, or should I just jump right into the scene?)

The throne room doors swing open, revealing a man. He has a slightly stooped posture that makes it difficult to guess his true height, a balding head, slightly wrinkled features, and flowing, dark grey robes. He is trailed by a shadow that seems to linger in the tiles too long after the mans passage, and a pair of armed men unsure whether they are a guest's escort or a prisoner's guard.

The man steeples his hands in front of him and inclines his head towards the throne.
"You requested my presence, your majesty?"

- The marvelous smith, thats what the people call you."Capable of crafting tools from thin air",they say."A magician",some even say.

The empress leans forward.

- Yet the real magician we have here*pointing her hand to Lachlan the Mad*assures us that you are merely doing parlor tricks to fool the people in their hour of need.

- So,monk*nearly spitting that word out with contempt*,should we believe the people and use your talents for the good of the empire?Or should we execute you on the spot for abusing the trust of our loyal subjects?
